As part of the Graduate Initiative for "Energy and Industry of the Future" ((GI EIF)), UCBL has launched a scholarship campaign for students from outside France who wish to enroll in the 2nd year of mechanical engineering, and to pursue a research program via an internship at LMFA on the topic "Air Trumpets".
Eligibility : M1 from outside France. Also, the scholarship requires registration at the UCBL (Lyon) Master M2 MFE : Fluid Mechanics and Energetic for academic year 2026-2027. The internship should be taken at LMFA in the UCBL site on the proposed topic during Spring - Summer 2027 (duration : 6 months).
Context and objective of the proposed internship :
It is very common to observe air bubbles when we pour water into a glass. Nonetheless, this seemingly simple, yet ubiquitous phenomenon whereby air is entrained in the form of bubbles is still a widely open question. This study will be dedicated to study of a viscous plunging liquid jet which drives a thin film of air into a pool containing the same liquid. By controlling the viscosity of the liquid, and both the jet speed and diameter as well, we want to characterize experimentally the thickness and the shape of the entrained air film. Such an investigation will provide the necessary foundation to investigate the criteria of film rupture which leads to air bubble formation in viscous air entrainment flows.
