Research Area Explorer

Explore academic disciplines and research topics in an interactive graph. Search for an area, follow its place in the discipline hierarchy, and discover related articles, people, and groups on OpenWorldLab.

Discover connected research areas

  • Search across research areas, including topics in branches that are still collapsed.
  • Expand broad disciplines into more specific fields, or collapse branches to focus the graph.
  • Follow an area’s parent disciplines and browse its more specialised topics.
  • Switch between hierarchy and radial layouts, and adjust labels and node sizes.
  • Open the selected area’s details to find related articles, people, and groups.

How to get started

  1. Enter a discipline or topic in the search box and select a matching area.
  2. Click nodes to expand or collapse their branches, and zoom or pan to explore the graph.
  3. Use the details panel to follow the area’s hierarchy and open relevant content.
  4. Use display options to change the layout, or fit the graph to bring the visible areas into view.

Understanding the discipline hierarchy

Broad disciplines branch into narrower fields and specialised topics. Following the hierarchy helps you place an unfamiliar subject in context, discover nearby areas, and choose a useful starting point for exploring research. The links in each area’s details panel let you continue that exploration through OpenWorldLab’s content and community.
